West Ham boost as Fabian Balbuena red card overturned

West Ham boost as outcome of Fabian Balbuena appeal revealed

West Ham’s appeal against the red card picked up by Fabian Balbuena at the weekend has proven successful, the club have confirmed.

Balbuena sent packing

David Moyes’ men were of course back in action on Saturday evening, when the Hammers welcomed capital rivals Chelsea to the London Stadium.

The clash marked a crucial one in the Premier League top-4 race, with the two sides, ahead of kick-off, having been locked on points in 4th.

When all was said and done, though, Chelsea’s class proved just too much for a West Ham side who continue to defy the odds, as a solitary Timo Werner strike proved the difference come the full-time whistle.

In the aftermath of the capital showdown, however, it was not the eventual result which grabbed the headlines.

Instead, this came in the form of the latest controversial decision stemming from a VAR check.

Ten minutes from time, Fabian Balbuena was sent for an early bath by referee Chris Kavanagh, after the stopper was deemed to have been guilty of ‘serious foul play’ for what was widely viewed as an accidental collision with Ben Chilwell:

Irons win out

In turn, after manager David Moyes labelled the decision ‘rubbish’ in his post-match interview, it came as little surprise to hear that West Ham were set to launch an appeal on Monday night.

And, as outlined above, it has not taken at all long for the Londoners to hear back from the FA.

As confirmed in an official statement released a short time ago, Balbuena’s dismissal has, as expected, been overturned.

The Paraguayan will therefore be available to feature in West Ham’s Premier League meeting with Burnley next Monday.
