It’s time for the play-offs in the British basketball season, and the action gets under way with a pair of double-headers from the WBBL this weekend.

Sunday sees the Nottingham Wildcats take on the Manchester Met Mystics from 3pm, before the BBL Cup champion London Lions face the Essex Rebels from 5:30pm.

The Lions had been the closest rivals to the WBBL’s two frontrunners, the league champion Sevenoaks Suns and second-placed Leicester Riders, as they finished third and just four points off the latter. Nottingham sat 10 points behind them in fourth, two points ahead of Essex and Manchester, both of whom closed out the season with identical 10-10 records.

The Suns opened their postseason campaign in style in Saturday’s early tip-off, cruising to a 76-59 victory over the Oaklands Wolves behind 20 points from Irene Garrido and 18 from Cat Carr.

In the late game the the Riders were stunned 79-73 by the seventh-placed Newcastle Eagles, who were led by a game-high 26 points from Abbey Lowe alongside 24 points from Alison Gorrell.
