Roy Keane urges Man United to allow Edinson Cavani to leave in summer

Roy Keane urges Man United to allow Edinson Cavani to leave in summer

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has this evening explained why he feels allowing Edinson Cavani to move on would be the correct decision for the club.

The name of Uruguayan hitman Cavani has of course been back in the headlines over the last couple of weeks.

This comes with the former PSG man, on the back of a series of fitness problems, having exploded back onto the scene at Old Trafford.

In the absence of the sidelined Anthony Martial, Cavani has stepped up to the plate in a major way, acting as a much-needed focal point in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s frontline.

Across his last five outings, the 34-year-old has directly contributed to a hugely impressive 7 goals.

Two such strikes were forthcoming in midweek, as Cavani proved a central figure in United’s remarkable comeback victory over AS Roma, to all but book their spot in the final of the Europa League.

‘Hope they don’t keep him’

In turn, amid such a standout spell of form, calls have begun to mount amongst the Red Devils fanbase for Ed Woodward and co. to work out any remaining hitches, and convince Cavani to remain in Manchester beyond the summer.

As outlined above, however, one individual not at all keen to see such a scenario play out is former midfielder and United icon Roy Keane.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the club’s postponed Premier League meeting with Liverpool this evening, Keane revealed his opinion that extending Cavani’s deal would only paper over the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is in need of a real long-term addition up top:

‘I kind of hope that they don’t keep him, because then they might look and think ‘we don’t need to go and get another’.’

‘He’s 34, if you’re hanging your hat on Cavani next year to getting United back to winning league titles, forget about it.’

‘He’ll be a back-up striker and he won’t want to be a back-up striker, so that’s why he’ll be reluctant to sign a new contract and there’s obviously family reasons behind it.’
