Premier League shelve plans to have away fans in grounds this season

An update on fans returning to football stadiums in England this season has emerged on Wednesday.

No away fans in grounds this season

The Premier League has shelved its plans to see some away fans return to stadiums before the end of the current season.

According to The Times, PL chiefs were said to be keen to allow 500 away fans in the final two rounds of top-flight fixtures for 2020/21.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters was even said to have written to all 20 clubs saying that the government was planning to relax the ban on away fans after the 17th of May.

However, several clubs responded by raising concerns about possible obstacles to such a plan.

It is added that Safety advisory groups were unhappy about policing costs and what could be considered unnecessary travel for people in areas badly affected by the pandemic.

Such views, though, do seem to be somewhat unnecessary at this point in the year.

As reported on Tuesday, more than 50 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been given out in the UK, with over 34 million of those first doses.

Covid cases across England have also been steadily declining for some time now, despite children returning to school, pubs reopening outdoors and non-essential retail being open for several weeks now.

Should the cases continue to remain low, it is expected that all restrictions should be lifted on the 21st of June across England.

Despite this, it was reported recently that though indoor settings such as cinemas and theatres will have no cap on attendance post-June 21st, football stadiums will continue to do so.
