How likely are Arsenal to sign Athletic Club’s Unai Simon after suggestions Mikel Arteta wants Spanish international

Keeper situation at Arsenal

Arsenal’s loss against Everton brought into focus the goalkeeping position after Bernd Leno’s huge error cost the Gunners a chance to win the game.

Mikel Arteta backed the German international but reference second keeper Mat Ryan as an option for the club.

“I think we have two really good goalkeepers. Mat got a chance because he deserves it. I said before the game that he’d been training really really well and Bernd is our number one keeper and he’s been doing well and errors are part of football,” he said.

Could the performance have done enough to convince the Spaniard he needs to address the position this summer?

Unai Simon to Arsenal?

The links with Athletic Club’s Unai Simon originate in Spain from La Razon.

They credit Arsenal alongside Borussia Dortmund, West Ham and Monaco with interest in the Spanish international.

He may be known to Arsenal supporters for his major mistake during the last international break for La Roja.

Against Kosovo, the Athletic Club stopper rushed out and took a heavy touch before Halimi came in to lob the ball into the net from an incredible distance.

However, this is not typical of Simon who has replaced the world’s most expensive keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga exceptionally well.

However, the likelihood is that this is a deal which doesn’t suit Arsenal. Despite his quality, Simon is not a significant upgrade on Bernd Leno and having signed a contract in 2020 for 5 years, Simon said he has ambitions to retire in Bilbao.

“My thought when renewing was to be here playing until the end of the contract and hopefully until the end of my career,” he said.

Athletic Club are notoriously shrewd negotiators often insisting teams pay their player’s release clauses. Simon however does not have one, making him even harder to poach.

A high bid would be necessary, money which Arsenal would certainly rather invest elsewhere leaving this deal very unlikely.
