Pep Guardiola confirms Aguero will be handed chance to break Rooney’s PL record

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has assured that Sergio Aguero will be handed the chance to break a long-standing Premier League record held by Wayne Rooney, over the final weeks of the season.

Citizens cruise

City and Aguero were of course back in action a short time ago.

The Sky Blues made the trip to Selhurst Park, for a Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace.

Guardiola and co. headed into proceedings aware that a 3-point haul, followed by a Manchester United defeat at the hands of Liverpool tomorrow, would see them officially crowned as champions.

And, when all was said and done in the capital, the Citizens did their part.

The aforementioned Aguero opened the afternoon’s scoring early in the 2nd-half, rattling a trademark finish into the roof of the Palace net, before Ferran Torres put any hopes of an Eagles comeback to bed with a 2nd for the visitors just minutes later.

‘He deserves it’

In turn, on the back of the full-time whistle at Selhurst, it came as little surprise to see Man of the Match Aguero, amid a testing campaign to date, steal the headlines.

The Argentine looked razor sharp throughout the 90 minutes in London, reminding fans that, when fit and firing, he remains one of the best in the business.

In turn, speaking during a post-match interview, Pep Guardiola was inevitably drawn on Aguero’s display, ahead of the veteran hitman’s imminent departure from the Etihad in the summer.

And the City boss was quick to lavish praise on the club legend, stating:

‘What a goal. What a player. What a man.’

‘He was injured many times but he has been training really well and he is another weapon we have next Tuesday [against PSG].’

From here, Guardiola was asked whether he intends to hand Aguero sufficient game-time over the campaign’s run-in, to break a Wayne Rooney Premier League record.

The ex-Manchester United man currently stands as the top-scoring one-club player in Premier League history, having found the net on 183 occasions for the Red Devils.

Aguero’s latest strike this afternoon, though, guided him just one shy of Rooney’s tally, with four games to play.

And Guardiola, in turn, assured that the Argentine will be afforded ample playing time over the weeks ahead, with Aguero ‘deserving’ of the record:

‘He deserves it.’
