FIFA member pushing for ‘World League’ after Super League collapse

World League proposal

Just when supporters thought that the Super League could have been coming to an end, a proposal for a ‘World League’ has come to the fore. The biggest surprise though is that it emanates from within FIFA, who recently publicly denounced the plans of a breakaway Super League.

A council member of FIFA has spoken of the importance of setting up a ‘World League’ so that teams from across the world can play Europe’s elite clubs.

“The important thing is that FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), alongside all continents’ confederations, are working on organising a World League that will allow three or four teams from Africa to play against Liverpool and topflight teams,” Abo Rida, the Egyptian FIFA council member said.

“It’s the big challenge that we are thinking of during the coming two years.”

Currently the FIFA World Club Cup, which Bayern Munich won last year, is the only option for inter-continental club competitions bar preseason tournaments.

Hypocritical FIFA?

Journalist Philippe Auclair made the valid point during Gianni Infantino’s condemnation of the Super League that an African version was being touted to be in discussions.

However, Rida said that for the moment an African Super League was ‘just a proposal.’

“Organising the African Super League is just a proposal, as the football industry is a big financial matter. It is being discussed,” Rida said.

It is likely that the FIFA World League would not be semi-closed like the Super League proposals. It would appear very hypocritical of the organization to suggest such a tournament after the condemnation of the Super League.

Although, this is football and anything can happen.
